December

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  Now that December has arrived we are starting many new topics at school.

Reading - We will begin Non-Fiction this week!  Last week we went non-fiction shopping with all the third grade classes. Student selected books based on their topic choices and they will read various books to learn all about non-fiction reading.

Math - Today we will begin another Cathy Fosnot unit called The Big Dinner.  Students will work with partners to determine strategies to help them with important skills such as planning a dinner.  They will figure out the price per pound of a big turkey, as well as calculate costs of vegetables.

Writing - Students are finishing up their Information Writing pieces and are publishing their books.

Social Studies - We are starting a new unit and students will learn about South America including Brazil.

Don't forget, it's conference week so students have modified days Tuesday - Friday!

One more thing....today Ox Ridge students had the opportunity to meet the author Peter Lourie.  He's an inspiring author AND adventurer who has written many interesting books.  Ask your child about his visit!

Students....hard at work!

Students are finishing their Information Writing pieces.

Math Fun

Students worked as teams to do the long jump.  They measured the distances and came up with strategies to find the differences in their jumps.

Halloween

Tomorrow is Halloween and students are welcome to wear their costumes!  However, masks and weapons are not permitted.  If your child does not want to wear a costume, he/she could simply wear a jersey, funny hat, pajamas, or their regular school outfit.  We will enjoy watching the kindergarten parade at 10:00 am and we will also have a party.

We have a very exciting week!  First of all, we have an enrichment program on Wednesday, where students will learn about science in a museum setting.  Also, on Thursday we have our first field trip, and we will be going to the Darien Recycling Center.  Make sure students wear comfortable walking shoes.

This week we started science. Students learned about investigating by observing Rattlebacks. This was quite fascinating as students noticed the unique movement of the Rattleback, otherwise known as the Celt Stone.  We are also starting to learn about Recycling!  The first project is for students to make Trash Treasures using anything "used."

This week we launched our reading unit on Series Books!  Students went book shopping earlier in the week and now they are well underway in their books.  Students will need to read at least 3 books in a series and then they may move on to another series.  Since all 3rd grades are involved in this unit at once, there may not be enough books. Therefore, if your child asks to take a trip to the Darien Library to find more books, please encourage him/her.

In Writing we finished our first personal narrative pieces.  We will meet with Mrs. Collin's class on Friday to celebrate and share our stories.

Students are enjoying the new Investigations program in Math.  They are working on adding to 100 and ordering numbers on a number line.  Students have also been bringing in their collections of 1,000.  The pictures will be shared on our bulletin board.

In Social Studies, students have been learning how to do research on their regions.  In library this week, they explored sites such as "culture grams."  Remember, this can be accessed via the Ox Ridge  Library home page.

Have a great weekend....remember, no school on Monday (for students).

Updates

We are into our 3rd week of school and I'l like to give you a little update of some of our classroom activities.

We are well underway with Reader's Workshop and are concentrating on finding "Just Right" books in order to become fantastic readers.  This week we also started a read aloud with the book, Stone Fox. Students are learning to think deeply and respond in their journals.

In Math we began the Cathy Fosnot unit called Groceries, Stamps, and Measuring Strips.  Students are working collaboratively in small groups to explore various strategies for determining items at the grocery store, and the cost of stamps.  Some of their thinking includes repeated addition, doubling, grouping, and multiplying.  Students are not only discussing their reasoning, they are also writing about their thinking and sharing strategies.  We are lucky to have the document camera in our classroom, and students are enjoying sharing their work.

Students did a great job decorating their Writing Journals!  This week we started brainstorming for story ideas, and we also wrote small moments about special people in our lives.  Tomorrow we'll begin thinking about places that have impacted us.

This month Reading takes precedent on the homework front!  It's tremendously important to create reading lives at home, and this means reading at least 25 minutes every night.  Don't forget, students must record their reading in their logs.

As you know, we have started using assignment pads to keep track of homework.  Students are getting into a routine and they are doing a terrific job.  I think it's just great that parents are even signing the entries.

Thank you for sending tissues and wipes!

New Year!

Another school year is starting and I'm excited to be in a new classroom! It's the old art room, so make sure you go to the correct room...otherwise you'll end up in 4th grade!

This year we are starting the new 6-day rotation schedule and Monday. August 26th is "A" day.  Our only special is World Language (Spanish), and it's at the end of the day.

For the first day, please make sure you have some of the items on your supply sheet including pencils, 3 marble notebooks, and colored pencils.  Also, don't forget a healthy snack!  I will send home a schedule of the new calendar which includes daily specials, and if you need an extra supply list I'll send one as well.
